Of course it's not true. That kind of shit isn't real. He was telling you the things you wanted to hear. He got close to you, treatment you nicely then after a while showed you who he is. I’ve seen one but she isnt much help asides from giving me antidepressants. I’ve talked to counselors and all that who’ve been a lot more helpful though!
I hate to say it, but it also sounds to me like it could be to isolate her from her friends and family. As it is, she’s afraid to talk in front of her friends to avoid being embarrassed. A logical next step would be avoiding hanging out with them or seeing them to avoid being put in this situation.
OOP, I hate to say this, but a person who can’t be nice to you in front of everyone isn’t actually a nice person. Whatever motives we can think of to explain this behavior, there isn’t a single one that’s good or a sign of a healthy relationship for you.
