The problem with breaking someone’s trust like this is that it’s completely rational for them to assume past behavior is a predictor of future behavior. And now your past behavior includes this. Whatever you do to rebuild trust will have to be much more than it took to break it.

I think this situation is more complex than commenters are acting.
