This is a bunch of separate things that have come to me as I read this and the some of the other comments, so I apologize for the scatteredness.
First, you may not know this (understandably), but there ARE games in the vein out there that do make money. It's not necessarily a rediculous idea to think “If they can do it why not me?”
Second, we creatives do tend to take things as far down the rabbit hole as possible. Whether it's a character with 20 page backstory that we'll never use or a project with tons of documentation no one else will read. I have notes for projects and stories that, while not x-rated or objectionable are just as pointless laying around in a similar manner.
To be honest, he tried a lot more to make you feel better then I might have at his age. I probably would have just said, “Yeah, I saw an ad where people pay micro transactions to do things like this, so Eddie and Mike figured I'd write this, Eddie model the characters and Mike would do the coding and we'd get their .99 per click! Turned out to be harder then that, and it's a rubbish idea with bad writing, so I kept it along with everything else I work on so I know what works and what doesn't.”
