In this day and age there's no excuse. I never had fish as a kid, but have two tanks now. I did months of research and joined the aubreddit communities here to read and learn and even ask for help when needed.
I've done enough research to learn that while reptiles like snakes and bearded dragons are cool I am NOT down for the maintenance and care they'd require. Same thing for rabbits! And ferrets!
I'm allergic to cats but learned enough about them from house sitting that I can provide basic care if needed, and know when it's out of my scope and I would need to contact a vet. And cats are typically (exceptions based on cat personality) one of the easiest and lowest maintenance pets there are. If the wife couldn't care for a cat, I would never have permitted another animal.
