A relationship is a partnership. It's supposed to be you two working together as a team to achieve a life that your both happy with. This can't happen if one party ignores the wants and needs of the other and makes selfish decisions. There should be discussions, compromises, and plans that both of you agree on and are comfortable with.
I think you made the right decision. It would be one thing if you were involved with his future planning. Making unilateral decisions like that is pretty controlling and who knows how that would work out when kids are involved or your stuck together due to a morgage.
